Hey book friends let’s kick this week off with a review!
Bright Young Women by Jessica Knoll
“Things grow differently when they’re damaged, showing us how to occupy strange new ground to bloom red instead of green. We can be found, brighter than before.”
All I can say about this book is wow, job well done. Bright Young Women is the story of two women coming together to bring a serial killer to justice. Pamela Schumacher is the president of the sorority where two of her sisters were murdered, sexually assaulted, and others severely beaten within inches of their lives. Martina Cannon’s partner disappeared years prior and was assumed to be a victim of The Defendant as he is so named because his real name is of no importance. This story will definitely take you on a ride, stress you out, and at times make you angry. It reminded me of so many true crime stories where law enforcement failed victims and caused other women and girls to become victims due to their lack of concern to solve cases. The media also played a part in this due to praising him for being charismatic and handsome. However, as the story unfolds, you will see that he is nothing but a mediocre man who used to deceit to get into school where he ultimately failed. The Defendant targeted bright, smart, accomplished young women because he was jealous of who they had become. Pamela and Tina stopped at nothing on their quest for justice and I really admired their resilience. I also love when alternating timelines are used to tell stories because it all comes together perfectly in the end. Some aspects of the book are very triggering so be mindful of that before diving in. Add this one to your list if you haven’t already! Happy reading!✨
